2000 BCE — The Shattering Attempt: Nephandi, the Neverborn, and the Near Awakening of the Nameless

“Three anchors. One nearly undone. The wound bled into time itself.”

— Jay Dee, writing in the Book of Fractures

Global Context (2000 BCE – World of Darkness)

  • The Concord is reached: the Garou end the Impergium, formally beginning the Age of Man.
  • Gilgamesh defies the Kindred and chooses mortality, aided by the Child of Gaia Siduri Sabitu. The Sumerian rejection of the Kindred spreads through the mortal psyche.
  • Imhotep arises in Egypt: a legendary Daedalean figure, combining medicine, architecture, and metaphysical science.
  • The Mokolé exist openly with humans in Crocodilopolis, mummified and revered by the Hem-ka-Sobk, and aligned with the Bubasti and Silent Striders.
  • Nagah, serpentine assassins and spiritual judges, begin spreading from the Indus Valley.
  • The Thothian Cult is at its height, and early iterations of the Wu Lung and Ahl-i-Batin rise in the East.
  • In Mesopotamia, geomantic instability spreads, coinciding with reports of a “star beneath the earth.”

🜃 Madtown Event — The Siege of the Third Anchor: The Nameless Nearly Freed

In Teejop (modern-day Madison), the Capitol Node, one of the three great anchors sealing the Nameless, comes under coordinated assault for the first time in recorded magical history.

A Nephandus of the Call of the Void, corrupted by a whispering dream from the Neverborn beneath the city, enacts a multi-realm ritual from deep within the Hollow Promise. The ritual involves:

  • The sacrifice of 13 Awakened souls, whose echoes still linger in the Dreaming.
  • A forced alignment of the Capitol Node with its Underworld reflection, weakening the fabric of the seal.
  • The summoning of a chthonic wyrm spirit—not of Gaia or the Wyrm, but something older, from the Dreamless Depths.

The Nephandi’s actions nearly free the Nameless, and cause a chain reaction:

  • New Eden experiences an umbro-tectonic rupture, severing ties between node networks in Mesopotamia.
  • New Avalon’s resonance lens fractures, redirecting its ley flow south for the next 4,000 years.
  • Malkav's own psychic bindings begin to ripple, causing episodes of mass madness in Babylon and parts of pre-Druidic Europe.

The seal in Madtown holds, but is severely compromised. Jay Dee and a surviving proto-Tradition coalition rebind the third anchor using living memory, sacrificing a Dreamspeaker’s entire ancestral line to hold the barrier.

The Nameless whispers to the Neverborn beneath the stone layers of Teejop. Their bond becomes fused. This is the first time the Nameless and a Neverborn are psychically entangled—creating a rot point in the Gauntlet that will not be fully sealed until Madison, Wisconsin is founded millennia later.

Long-Term Consequences

  • The Madtown Node becomes unstable, its resonance fraying across layers of the Umbra, Deep Dreaming, and even the Underworld.
  • New Avalon and New Eden will remain fractured—imperfect in their resonance—until the Three Anchors are restored by the geopattern convergence that occurs with the founding of Madison.
  • The site of the ritual—the deepest point beneath Lake Mendota—is known to some Choristers and Dreamspeakers as the Stone Maw, and to certain Wraiths as the Threshold of the Thirteenth Bell.
  • A prophecy is etched in the Capitol Node's stonework by an unknown hand: “When the city rises, so too will the scar. The third fire must burn again, or all shall dream in silence.”
