1 CE – Dream of the Hollow Mask, Sentinel Appears
1 CE: The Silent Watch
This period marks the beginning of a long interval in which the guardians of the Nameless left few surviving records. The Third Fire, renewed around 1000 BCE, continued to stabilize the ancient prison beneath the Four Lakes region.
Events
- The Croatan and other Indigenous guardians continued watching the Four Lakes region. Knowledge of the Nameless was preserved through oral tradition, ceremony, dreams, and relationships with local spirits rather than through a single written archive.
- The prison of the Nameless remained stable. No major breach or renewal is known to have occurred in the region during this period.
- Later occult historians called this poorly documented interval the Silent Watch. The name describes the absence of reliable surviving records, not an absence of Indigenous history or activity.
- Elsewhere in the supernatural world, mysterious Sentinels appeared in the Grand Hall of Endless Gates. No reliable account establishes that one of these beings visited the Four Lakes region.
World of Darkness Events
- Between approximately 10 BCE and 400 CE, the Hermetic writings later collected as the Corpus Hermeticum were composed and codified.
- The Messianic Voices emerged among early Christian mystics and later influenced the development of the Celestial Chorus.
- A mysterious race of Sentinels appeared in the Grand Hall of Endless Gates. Travelers were permitted to pass through the Hall but were forbidden from establishing permanent residence there.
- A powerful vampire associated with Mictlantecuhtli may have reached North America around this period. Surviving supernatural accounts do not provide a precise date.
- The Kyphur, feline Kinfolk associated with the Bubasti, disappeared around the late first century BCE or early first century CE. A small number reportedly survived as blood-bound servants of the Followers of Set.
Consequences
- The Third Fire remained active and the Nameless stayed contained.
- Knowledge of the prison became increasingly local, guarded, and difficult for outsiders to recover.
- The lack of surviving written evidence later allowed mages, vampires, and other supernatural factions to impose their own interpretations on the ancient history of the Four Lakes.
- The Silent Watch continued until the containment system required another major renewal around 1000 CE.
Legacy in Madison
By 1985, very little reliable information from this period remained. What survived existed primarily in Indigenous oral traditions, spirit testimony, archaeological sites, and fragmentary supernatural records. Later Madison occultists frequently mistook the absence of written records for an absence of guardianship.
Claims concerning a Hollow Mask, a Scrollless Archive, or a Sentinel visiting the future site of Picnic Point remain unverified legends rather than established history.
