13.8 Billion BCE: The Big Bang and the Birth of the Triat
Before the first world turned beneath a sun, Creation existed as heat, darkness, possibility, and law. What awakened within it depends upon who remembers.
Approximately 13.8 billion years ago, the observable universe emerged from an extremely hot and dense early state. Space expanded. The universe cooled. Matter formed, gravity gathered it, and darkness eventually gave birth to the first stars and galaxies.
Mortal science calls this beginning the Big Bang.
Supernatural traditions remember several different beginnings. Garou teachings describe the first workings of the Triat. Fallen angels speak of the Allmaker, the Elohim, and a Creation built in many simultaneous layers. Awakened cosmologists argue that neither account can be understood without considering Consensus, Prime, spirit, and the changing structure of reality.
These accounts sometimes overlap. They also contradict one another.
No surviving authority has proven which description, if any, records Creation as it truly occurred.
The Mortal Account
Modern cosmology places the beginning of the observable universe approximately 13.8 billion years ago.
The Big Bang was not an explosion into empty space. It was the rapid expansion of space itself from an early state of extraordinary heat and density. The nature of the universe's first moments remains uncertain, and mortal science cannot yet provide a confirmed account of what preceded cosmic inflation.
As the universe expanded and cooled:
- Fundamental forces assumed distinct behavior.
- Subatomic particles formed.
- Atomic nuclei emerged during the universe's first minutes.
- Neutral atoms formed hundreds of thousands of years later.
- Gravity slowly gathered matter into increasingly dense regions.
- The first stars and galaxies appeared after a prolonged cosmic dark age.
- Stellar death distributed heavier elements through space.
- Later generations of stars, planets, and eventually living worlds formed from that material.
This account describes observable physical processes. It neither proves nor disproves the supernatural interpretations preserved by spirits, mages, shapeshifters, and the fallen.
The Garou Account: The First Cycle
According to ancient Garou and Fera traditions, three primal forces acted upon the newborn universe. Later peoples would call them the Triat:
- The Wyld embodied possibility, generation, transformation, and unrestrained change.
- The Weaver embodied definition, order, structure, and permanence.
- The Wyrm embodied conclusion, dissolution, purification, and necessary destruction.
These beings were not originally gods in the human sense. They possessed no mortal faces, scriptures, or temples. They were vast cosmic principles whose actions shaped both physical and spiritual reality.
In the oldest form of the cycle, the Wyld generated possibility. The Weaver gave possibility form. The Wyrm ended Patterns that had completed their purpose, clearing the way for further Creation.
The cycle was therefore:
- Possibility. Pattern. Ending. Renewal.
None of the three was inherently corrupt within this account. Creation required all of them.
Without the Wyld, nothing new could emerge. Without the Weaver, nothing could remain coherent. Without the Wyrm, nothing could end, decay, or make room for what followed.
Whether the Triat literally awakened during the Big Bang, existed before it, or represents a later spiritual interpretation of cosmic processes remains disputed.
The Weaver's First Patterns
The history bible describes the Weaver as beginning the work of forming galaxies, planets, and stars.
This description should not be understood as a single instantaneous act. Mortal astronomy indicates that stars and galaxies developed over immense periods following the Big Bang. Within Garou cosmology, the entire process may represent the Weaver imposing stable Pattern upon the Wyld's primordial possibility.
Physical laws became consistent. Matter behaved predictably. Gravity gathered scattered material. Atoms bonded. Stars ignited, and galaxies acquired structure.
Garou mystics describe these developments as the Weaver's earliest threads.
These first structures were not yet the Pattern Web known to modern spirits and mages. Humanity had not arisen, no mortal Consensus shaped reality, and the modern Gauntlet did not separate the physical world from the Umbra.
Some Awakened scholars nevertheless believe the foundations of the later Pattern Web were already present. In this interpretation, the same metaphysical impulse that would eventually define spirits, reinforce natural law, and harden the Gauntlet first manifested through the universe's tendency to produce stable structures.
The Wyrm and the First Endings
Stars eventually exhausted their fuel. Some faded. Others collapsed or exploded, casting newly forged elements into space.
According to Garou tradition, the uncorrupted Wyrm governed these necessary endings. It did not destroy out of malice. It broke down what had completed its purpose so that Creation could continue.
Supernovae, stellar collapse, radioactive decay, and the dissolution of old structures all reflected this original function.
The history bible claims the Wyrm exploded stars and created black holes. This is best understood as a Garou interpretation rather than literal mortal astrophysics. Many stellar black holes form through the collapse of massive stars. Supermassive black holes appeared remarkably early in cosmic history, but their precise origins remain under investigation.
Mortal physicists have also proposed the possible existence of primordial black holes formed during the universe's earliest moments. Their existence has not been confirmed.
To Garou theurges, these violent processes expressed the Wyrm's role as the Balancer.
To the Weaver, every ending destroyed a Pattern.
Within this difference lay the possibility of future conflict.
Black Holes and the Hidden Pattern
Black holes became subjects of fear, reverence, and speculation among supernatural cosmologists.
Their event horizons conceal whatever crosses beyond them from external observation. Gravity distorts space and time around them. The laws governing their interiors remain beyond direct mortal investigation.
The history bible describes singularities as hidden behind event horizons because even the Weaver's laws required their existence, while the Weaver herself resisted the destruction they represented.
This is a mythic interpretation. It is not established objective history.
Theories preserved in Awakened and spirit archives include:
- Black holes may cast unusual reflections into the Deep Umbra.
- Some may conceal isolated Realms or collapsed spiritual domains.
- Their Umbral reflections may be impassable even to powerful spirits.
- Certain singularities may sever locations from ordinary space and time.
- Some may function as prisons, wounds, mouths, or passages.
- Other black holes may possess no special spiritual significance at all.
None of these theories has been conclusively proven.
Those claiming to have approached such boundaries rarely provide accounts that agree.
The Wyld Beyond Form
The Wyld remained present wherever possibility exceeded established form.
Garou and Awakened mystics associate its primordial influence with cosmic expansion, quantum uncertainty, spontaneous transformation, and everything that might exist before possibility becomes Pattern.
Some describe the cosmic microwave background as Creation's oldest surviving physical echo. Others reject attempts to assign spiritual intention to measurable radiation.
The Wyld leaves few orderly records. The Weaver leaves structures. The Wyrm leaves absences and ruins. The Wyld leaves possibilities, most of which never become real.
Some may still be waiting beyond the limits of established Pattern.
The Angelic Account
The history bible preserves a second creation narrative associated with Demon: The Fallen.
According to this tradition, the Allmaker, also called the Infinite of Infinities, brought the universe into existence and created the Elohim. Seven angelic Houses were formed, each responsible for governing or shaping a different aspect of Creation.
Creation did not initially possess a single physical interpretation. It existed through multiple layers or facets, each simultaneously true. What mortal history describes as billions of years could also have unfolded as seven days. Humanity could have evolved through natural processes while Adam and Eve were shaped directly through angelic power.
Within this account, apparent contradictions were not errors. Reality was capable of holding several explanations at once.
The angels did not necessarily perceive the Triat as Garou understand it. Garou cosmology likewise does not require the Allmaker or Elohim to explain Creation.
Some supernatural scholars attempt to reconcile the traditions:
- The Triat may have been forces expressed through the angelic Houses.
- The angels may have shaped Creation using principles later personified as the Triat.
- The Allmaker may have existed beyond every force described by Garou cosmology.
- The angelic and Garou accounts may describe different layers of the same Creation.
- One or both traditions may be incomplete, symbolic, or damaged by the passage of time.
- Reality may once have supported both accounts without requiring them to agree.
These remain theological and metaphysical theories, not established facts.
Awakened Interpretations
The Awakened preserve no unified explanation for the beginning of the universe.
Celestial Choristers may understand the Big Bang as the first expression of the One, the divine command through which existence emerged from unity.
Hermetic cosmologists may describe Creation through emanation, sacred geometry, primordial elements, or the unfolding of divine intellect into increasingly material states.
Dreamspeakers often warn that scientific descriptions of physical history record only one portion of a far greater spiritual process.
Virtual Adepts and Void Engineers study the early universe through mathematics, observation, theoretical physics, and exploration of the furthest reaches of reality.
Some mages believe that the laws governing the early universe preceded human Consensus. Others claim that modern observations partially reconstruct a past rewritten by later belief.
No Tradition possesses evidence accepted by all the others.
Before the Gauntlet
The familiar divisions between physical and spiritual reality did not yet exist in their modern forms.
There were no Caerns, Nodes, Chantries, or Digital Web. No human Consensus defined what reality was permitted to become. The Gauntlet had not hardened into the barrier known by modern supernatural inhabitants.
Matter, spirit, symbol, and idea may have been less clearly divided. Alternatively, the distinction may have existed in a form no modern observer could recognize.
Later supernatural scholars have proposed several precursors to modern metaphysical structures:
- Stable celestial Patterns may have foreshadowed the Pattern Web.
- Violent astronomical events may have generated early spiritual turbulence.
- Singularities may have produced regions inaccessible to ordinary spirits.
- The earliest stars may have become associated with vast celestial Incarnae.
- Primordial concentrations of energy may have anticipated what mages would later call Nodes.
These interpretations remain matters of vision, doctrine, and metaphysical theory.
The First Possibility of Conflict
In the Garou account, the Triat was not yet trapped in the conflict known to later ages.
The Wyld created. The Weaver shaped. The Wyrm ended. Their interaction allowed the universe to change without dissolving into chaos or hardening into eternal stillness.
The possibility of imbalance nevertheless existed within their purposes.
The Weaver valued permanence.
The Wyrm required endings.
The Wyld resisted limitation.
Each fulfilled a necessary function, but each threatened the work of the others.
This was not yet the imprisonment and corruption of the Wyrm. Those events belong to later mythic history. It was only the first tension inherent in Creation, the question of whether anything should be allowed to change, endure, or end.
The universe began in light.
Its oldest conflict concerned what that light would be permitted to become.
Historical Reliability
This article combines modern cosmology, Garou and Fera traditions, Awakened metaphysics, the angelic creation account associated with Demon: The Fallen, and material preserved in the Madtown by Night history bible.
It should not be treated as an objective history of Creation.
The Garou, Fera, mages, spirits, demons, and mortal religions preserve incompatible accounts of the universe's beginning. Some may describe the same processes through different symbols. Others may remember fundamentally different Creations.
The old `10–20 billion years` estimate reflects the range found in earlier World of Darkness timelines and older mortal cosmology. The approximately 13.8-billion-year date reflects modern astronomical evidence.
Within the World of Darkness, contradiction does not necessarily establish that one account is false.
Reality may once have remembered more than one beginning.
