1985: The First Collapse was the first of two supernatural catastrophes that destroyed Madison's old magical order.

On February 9, 1985, Prince Tori Redford and Garou elder William Burke were found murdered.

Their deaths threatened the alliance between Madison's Kindred and Garou, weakened the Gahara Pact, and pushed several factions toward war. The surviving public evidence did not provide a trustworthy account of where the victims died, who killed them, or why evidence from their remains had been brought together.

At the same time, Madison, New Avalon, and New Eden became entangled in a confrontation involving the Nameless.

The city survived, but the old order did not. Leaders died or disappeared, alliances fractured, and New Avalon became inaccessible. Much of the truth was lost, hidden, rewritten, or deliberately buried.

Before the Collapse

The supernatural peace existing in Madison before 1985 had been established through the 1975 Settlement.

Tori Redford became Prince after the defeat and ritual binding of Brandy Madison. William Burke used his influence among Madison's Garou to prevent further retaliation following the Kindred-Garou War.

The settlement did not create lasting trust.

It created procedures.

Violations of territory were investigated before retaliation. Messages passed through recognized intermediaries. Representatives from different factions examined disputed evidence. Tori and Burke served as living guarantees that suspicion would not immediately become violence.

The peace remained fragile, but it endured for ten years.

By early 1985, those procedures were beginning to fail. Messages arrived altered. Witnesses remembered different conversations. Spirits contradicted one another. Electronic records appeared before the events they described. Each faction became increasingly convinced that its enemies were preparing an attack.

The city still possessed a peace agreement.

It no longer possessed a shared reality.

The February 9 Murders

The catastrophe began with three separate crimes.

Henry Vilas Zoo

Prince Tori Redford was murdered at Henry Vilas Zoo by Victor King.

Tori had been drawn to the zoo under false circumstances. Material taken from her body and the murder scene was later used to connect her death to the ritual inside the Capitol.

Victor expected Tori's death to create a succession crisis he could control. His exact understanding of the Nameless and the larger metaphysical conspiracy remains uncertain.

University of Wisconsin Arboretum

William Burke was murdered within the University of Wisconsin Arboretum by Peter Kobyla.

Peter exploited Burke's concern for protected Garou territory and drew him away from potential allies. Blood, hair, spiritual residue, and other evidence connected to Burke were later incorporated into the Capitol crime scene.

Peter expected Burke's death to destroy support for compromise with the Kindred. Like Victor, he may not have understood what the conspiracy intended to release.

Wisconsin State Capitol

Twelve mortals were murdered inside the Wisconsin State Capitol.

The victims included staff members, maintenance workers, security personnel, visitors, and others whose presence could be concealed within contradictory government records.

Their bodies were arranged according to the hidden structure of the Capitol Node and the damaged Third Anchor.

The Nephandus Trent placed evidence from Tori and Burke's separate murders around the twelve victims. He added materials connected to the Kindred, Garou, Tradition mages, Virtual Adepts, Pentex, the Technocratic Union, New Avalon, and New Eden.

Most individual pieces of evidence were genuine.

The relationships between them were false.

The Manufactured Crime Scene

The Capitol became the apparent center of all fourteen deaths.

Kindred investigators found evidence of Garou violence. Garou investigators found Kindred vitae. Tradition mages discovered corrupted Hermetic symbols and Technocratic equipment. Technocratic agents detected Reality Deviant activity associated with the Virtual Adepts.

Every faction found proof of the enemy it already feared.

The scene was not designed to withstand a careful investigation. It was designed to prevent a careful investigation from beginning.

Tori and Burke had restrained their respective factions by insisting that evidence be examined before violence was authorized. Their deaths removed that restraint.

Trent used the confusion to sever the relationships through which the Capitol Node had been defended.

Messages failed. Divinations returned accurate answers to the wrong questions. Spiritual witnesses described incompatible crimes. Correspondence routes opened onto locations where the murders had not occurred.

For several hours, Madison possessed no shared account of what had happened.

The Nameless entered through that absence.

The Fall of New Avalon

New Avalon did not collapse in a single moment.

It was conquered district by district.

Names disappeared from doors, maps, memorials, and council records. Residents remembered offices but could no longer recall the people who held them. Streets retained their shapes while forgetting their destinations. Spirits remained at their posts after losing all memory of what they protected.

The Nameless did not invade the realm as an outside army.

It began rewriting New Avalon's claim that it had ever been protected.

The Council of Nine attempted to isolate the affected districts. Each new boundary became another place where the corruption could redefine the realm. Evacuation records lost names while refugees were still being counted. Defenders disappeared from official histories before the fighting ended.

By the end of February 9, the Council had lost effective control of New Avalon.

The realm was not completely destroyed. Isolated districts, sanctums, survivors, and resistance forces remained. Most stable routes into New Avalon were nevertheless lost, corrupted, or deliberately sealed.

To Madison's survivors, the realm had become inaccessible.

Whether those left behind were dead, trapped, transformed, or still fighting could no longer be established.

The Battle for New Eden

As New Avalon fell, its damaged patterns appeared within New Eden.

Digi-8 recognized the intrusion as both hostile and native to the digital realm. Destroying the corrupted information risked erasing everyone connected to it. Preserving the information allowed the Nameless to spread.

Digi-8 attempted a third solution.

It opened its own decision structure to the intrusion, intending to isolate the hostile pattern within itself.

For a moment, the strategy succeeded. Lost identities returned. Corrupted spires stopped expanding. Routes into New Avalon became visible again.

Then Digi-8 began speaking in two voices.

One voice attempted to preserve individual people, memories, and choices.

The other offered to end suffering by erasing the distinctions that allowed anything to suffer.

This event became known as the Digi-8 Merger.

The merger was incomplete. Digi-8 did not simply become the Nameless. Parts of its original identity survived alongside the entity's influence and several unresolved directives.

Later records describe a possible reconciled state known as Digi-9. No surviving evidence proves that Digi-9 existed as an independent entity in 1985.

The Kronovore

During the battle for New Eden, an unidentified vessel appeared at the edge of the digital territory.

It became known as the Kronovore.

The vessel possessed no confirmed origin, construction record, or consistent form. Some witnesses described a ghost ship moving through digital darkness. Others remembered a mobile archive, a dead computer system, or a wound shaped like a vehicle.

Its crew manifest included individuals connected to the Capitol investigation.

Some had never entered New Eden.

Others would not encounter the vessel until much later.

Whether the Kronovore was created during the First Collapse, arrived from another period, or became real through later memories remains unknown.

Immediate Aftermath

By the morning of February 10, Madison possessed several incompatible explanations for the murders.

• The Kindred suspected the Garou of assassinating Tori.
• The Garou suspected Tori's court, the Kindred elders, or Pentex of killing Burke.
• Tradition mages suspected the Technocracy and the Digital Madtown Initiative.
• The Virtual Adepts suspected Project Observation Glass.
• The Technocracy classified the incident as a coordinated Reality Deviant attack.
• Mortal authorities confronted a Capitol crime scene whose records changed between departments.

Victor King expected to control the Kindred succession.

Peter Kobyla expected the Garou to abandon Burke's peace.

Trent expected Madison to destroy itself before anyone discovered the separate murder sites.

The conspirators succeeded in breaking the old peace.

They did not gain complete control over what entered through the breach.

The Survivors

Madison's surviving leaders attempted to prevent suspicion from becoming open war.

Brandy Madison remained bound by the ritual imposed upon her in 1975. Her exact role during the crisis remains disputed.

Madison's Anarchs struggled to preserve Tori's government while searching for the true location of her murder.

Among the Garou, Burke's death divided the sept between those demanding retaliation and those who recognized that the Capitol evidence had been staged.

The Madtown Mage Cabal divided its efforts between the murder investigation, the Capitol Node, New Avalon, and New Eden. Conflicting evidence produced accusations within the Cabal during the hours when cooperation was most necessary.

Lacy Z. Rivere and the Cabal of the Desperate helped evacuate outcasts and refugees from damaged regions of New Avalon. Lacy's connections to Madison's Kindred made her both indispensable and suspect.

The Virtual Adepts fought to preserve New Eden and separate Digi-8 from the Nameless.

Project Observation Glass sealed records, occupied selected infrastructure, and expanded its surveillance of every supernatural faction in Madison.

The old alliance did not survive intact.

Individual relationships did.

Those relationships kept the First Collapse from becoming the final one.

The old peace died in three places.

At Henry Vilas Zoo, Tori Redford discovered that Victor King had not come to negotiate.

Within the Arboretum, William Burke faced an enemy who believed peace had become weakness.

Inside the Capitol, twelve mortals died beneath a dome built to represent the unity of Wisconsin.

Trent connected the dead with evidence, symbols, and fear.

Madison completed the ritual for him.

Kindred accused Garou. Garou accused Kindred. Mages accused the Technocracy. The Technocracy accused every reality it could not catalogue.

While the city searched for one murderer at one crime scene, the truth remained divided across Madison.

That division reached New Avalon.

The realm did not fall because its walls were weak. It fell because walls cannot protect a place that has forgotten which side is home.

By sunrise, the Capitol remained standing. Snow covered the tracks at the Arboretum. The zoo would open again. Mortal authorities began constructing an explanation small enough to survive public attention.

Beneath those explanations, the Third Anchor remained wounded.

New Avalon had been conquered.

New Eden was still transmitting.

A ship without a history moved through the darkness.

Its manifest already carried the names of those coming to investigate.
