2000 BCE: The Black Concordance and the First Nephandic Incursion

“The first shadow asked the prison for a body. The Black Concordance taught the prison to call its jailers gods.”

Approximately one thousand years after the First Breach, an outside cabal discovered how the Three Wounded Anchors functioned.

They did not attempt to destroy the Stone Heart.

They attempted to become part of it.

The attackers corrupted the Anchor of Place, constructed a body through the Anchor of Image, and inserted an authoritative history into the Anchor of Record.

Their purpose was not merely to release the Nameless.

They intended to replace the Guardian Bound Below with a willing servant whose corruption the prison would recognize as guardianship.

Later occult histories called the attackers Nephandi.

The surviving records call their alliance the Black Concordance.

Their ritual became known as the Thirteenfold Incursion.

The place where it nearly succeeded became the Stone Maw.

The World Around 2000 BCE

The opening centuries of the second millennium BCE were marked by transformation across many human societies.

In Mesopotamia, the Third Dynasty of Ur collapsed around the end of the third millennium BCE. Cities, temples, archives, estates, obligations, laws, and religious offices survived through political upheaval.

Rulers died.

Dynasties ended.

The records continued speaking in their names.

In Egypt, the Middle Kingdom followed the reunification of Upper and Lower Egypt under Mentuhotep II. Older religious, artistic, political, and architectural traditions were preserved, revised, and granted new authority.

The dead continued participating in the lives of the living through tombs, names, offerings, images, inheritance, and memory.

Across the Indus region, large and sophisticated urban communities maintained systems of trade, craft production, water management, agriculture, measurement, and civic organization.

Their decline occurred gradually and unevenly after approximately 1900 BCE.

It should not be reduced to a single invasion or supernatural catastrophe.

In southern Britain, the great stone settings at Stonehenge had been raised during the preceding centuries. The monument belonged to the communities that built, visited, altered, and remembered the wider sacred landscape.

Those people should not be identified as Druids or members of later magical Traditions.

Across the world, human communities created systems capable of preserving authority beyond the lives of their creators.

Names survived bodies.

Debts survived agreements.

Offices survived rulers.

Monuments survived builders.

Rituals survived those who first understood them.

None of these developments caused the crisis beneath the Four Lakes.

They expressed a problem the prison already contained:

A structure could preserve authority after forgetting the person who first possessed it.

The Black Concordance learned how to weaponize that truth.

The Inheritance of the First Breach

The First Binding had originally contained the Nameless through three interlocking denials:

  • The Stone Heart denied the prisoner physical territory and embodiment.
  • The Unmade Kingdom denied the prisoner one complete identity.
  • The Common Memory denied the prisoner authority over the history of its imprisonment.

Each millennial crisis damaged one of those denials.

The Echo Seal allowed an erased identity to possess authority within the Common Memory.

The Broken Spiral allowed possible identities to project incomplete shadows from the Unmade Kingdom.

During the First Breach, the First Shadow used those flaws to acquire the Borrowed Body.

The Triform Binding closed the breach by separating the prison’s recognition into three systems:

The repair stopped the Borrowed Body.

It also provided instructions.

Anyone who controlled all three anchors could force the prison to recognize an impossible identity.

The First Shadow had discovered the method accidentally.

The Black Concordance reconstructed it deliberately.

The Black Concordance

The Black Concordance was not one ancient version of the modern Nephandi.

It was a temporary alliance among practitioners, spirits, the dead, corrupted guardians, dream entities, and servants of powers hostile to human and spiritual existence.

Some participants sought knowledge.

Some sought immortality.

Some believed creation itself was a prison.

Some wanted revenge against the guardians who maintained the Stone Heart.

Some believed the Nameless was not a prisoner but a truth that reality had mutilated.

Some intended to use the Nameless without freeing it.

Some believed replacing the Guardian Bound Below would give them control over every identity erased by the First Binding.

Later Nephandic factions claimed the Black Concordance as an ancestral Labyrinth.

Those claims cannot be verified.

The attackers did not share one language, culture, magical paradigm, or supernatural allegiance.

They shared a conclusion:

The prison could be conquered by giving it a guardian it could not refuse.

Surviving accounts identify thirteen principal conspirators.

Their original names are lost, suppressed, contradictory, or preserved only through ritual titles.

They became known as the Thirteen Hollow Witnesses.

The Thirteen Hollow Witnesses

The Thirteen Hollow Witnesses organized themselves around the Three Wounded Anchors.

Four corrupted the Anchor of Place.

Four corrupted the Anchor of Image.

Four corrupted the Anchor of Record.

The thirteenth stood between them.

That final witness was called the Voice Beneath the Bell.

No surviving account agrees upon the nature of the thirteen.

They may have included:

  • Awakened human practitioners.
  • Sorcerers who had entered infernal pacts.
  • Wraiths capable of possessing living bodies.
  • Changing Breed guardians corrupted by despair.
  • Spirits exiled from their natural relationships.
  • Ancient Kindred seeking access to memories of the First City.
  • Shadow Tensions produced by the Unmade Kingdom.
  • Descendants or remnants of the Borrowed Body.
  • Servants of a Neverborn.
  • Possible identities of Jay Dee.
  • Future Nephandi projected backward through the Anchor of Record.
  • Victims whose identities were rewritten after the ritual.
  • Thirteen bodies occupied by fewer than thirteen beings.

The Common Memory insists that thirteen people entered the ritual.

It does not agree that thirteen people existed before it began.

The Voice Beneath the Bell

The Voice Beneath the Bell acted as the Concordance’s central witness.

Some descriptions present the Voice as an elderly human carrying a staff made from blackened bone.

Others describe a child with a mouth full of silver teeth.

Wraiths remember a figure wrapped in burial cloth.

Garou accounts describe a wolf whose shadow resembled an open doorway.

Certain Awakened records identify the figure as Jay Dee.

Those records may preserve an authentic manifestation of Dee, an imitation created through the Unmade Kingdom, or a later attempt to place him at the center of every renewal.

The Voice claimed to have found the name of the Guardian Bound Below.

It promised that speaking the name thirteen times would restore the forgotten guardian as one complete person.

The promise attracted grieving guardians, descendants of earlier ritualists, and spirits who believed the Triform Binding had unjustly imprisoned one of its creators.

The Voice did possess a name.

Whether it belonged to the Guardian Bound Below remains unknown.

The name caused all three anchors to respond.

That was enough.

The Black Tablets

The Black Concordance preserved its ritual upon thirteen objects later called the Black Tablets.

The tablets were not identical.

Some were stone.

Some were clay.

Some were bone.

Some appeared to be pieces of dark glass.

One was reportedly made from skin that continued growing hair.

Another could not be seen directly but appeared in every reflective surface surrounding the other twelve.

Each tablet preserved one testimony.

Together, the testimonies created an artificial history.

They claimed:

  • The Thirteen Hollow Witnesses had participated in the First Binding.
  • The Guardian Bound Below had chosen them as lawful successors.
  • The Stone Heart had been built to contain a different prisoner.
  • The Nameless had once protected the surrounding land.
  • The First Shadow had been a guardian unjustly denied embodiment.
  • The Borrowed Body had been murdered by the Triform Binding.
  • The Three Wounded Anchors were intended to be controlled separately.
  • The Watchfire had once possessed thirteen flames.
  • The Black Concordance had renewed the prison during every previous crisis.
  • The Voice Beneath the Bell possessed the missing name of the Guardian Bound Below.
  • The thirteen had been invited to enter the Hollow Promise.
  • Their corruption was a burden accepted for the protection of others.
  • Replacing the Guardian Bound Below would complete the First Binding.

Each statement was false, incomplete, or impossible to verify.

Together, they formed a history internally consistent enough to influence the Anchor of Record.

This artificial history became the Black Concordance in its second meaning:

Not merely the name of the cabal, but the agreement they forced upon the past.

The Corruption of Place

The first four witnesses traveled through the landscape surrounding the Hollow Promise.

They did not claim territory.

They performed acts of guardianship.

They extinguished dangerous fires.

They returned lost children.

They buried abandoned dead.

They left food where people and animals would find it.

They repaired paths.

They carried water during drought.

They warned settlements of approaching violence.

Every act created a genuine relationship with the land.

Every act also concealed a second consequence.

The extinguished fires left patches of cold that spirits could not enter.

The rescued children dreamed of a black city.

The buried dead awoke in the Underworld facing the wrong direction.

Those who ate the abandoned food forgot one person from their family.

The repaired paths led dreamers toward the City Beneath the Stone.

The water carried memories belonging to the Borrowed Body.

The warnings caused the predicted violence to occur elsewhere.

The four witnesses built a history of service through poisoned mercy.

The Anchor of Place recognized the consequences.

The land remembered them as guardians.

Their motives did not matter.

This became the first corruption of the Anchor of Place.

The Stone Heart learned that a person could protect one life while poisoning the system sustaining every other life.

The Corruption of Image

The second group entered the City Beneath the Stone through the Echo Spiral.

There they found the sealed room associated with the Borrowed Body.

The room contained no body.

It contained thirteen shadows.

Each shadow depicted the same person living a different life.

One was a guardian.

One was a prisoner.

One was a child.

One was an elder.

One was human.

One was Garou.

One was Awakened.

One was dead.

One had never been born.

One wore Jay Dee’s face.

One cast the shadow of the Nameless.

One appeared as the Guardian Bound Below.

The final shadow belonged to whoever looked into the room.

The four witnesses constructed a body from those shadows.

Later histories call this manifestation the Concordant Body.

Unlike the Borrowed Body, the Concordant Body did not change uncontrollably according to recognition.

The witnesses assigned each possible form a ritual function.

The guardian could cross wards.

The prisoner could enter the Stone Heart.

The child could receive a new identity.

The elder could claim ancestral authority.

The human could acquire physical reality.

The Garou could establish a relationship with the land.

The Awakened form could alter the binding.

The dead form could enter the Underworld.

The unborn form could escape existing prophecy.

Jay Dee’s face could command structures connected to the First Binding.

The shadow of the Nameless could receive the prisoner’s pressure.

The image of the Guardian Bound Below could accept the guardian’s obligations.

The observer’s shadow allowed the body to resemble anyone witnessing it.

The Concordant Body was not one identity.

It was a ritual office capable of wearing whichever identity the prison required.

The Anchor of Image accepted it as complete.

The Corruption of Record

The third group entered the Common Memory.

They carried the Black Tablets.

The Common Memory did not accept their inscriptions merely because they had been written.

It tested the claims against the consequences preserved by the prison.

The witnesses therefore attached each false testimony to a real wound.

The absence of Whispering Owl became evidence that the Concordance had known the erased guardian.

The Echo Seal became evidence that the thirteen had participated in the first renewal.

The existence of the First Shadow became evidence that the prison had always required an embodied representative.

The blood left by the Borrowed Body became evidence that a guardian had been murdered.

The Three Wounded Anchors became evidence that thirteen guardians had divided their responsibilities.

The missing identity of the Guardian Bound Below became evidence that the Voice Beneath the Bell possessed the lost name.

The shattered Watchfire became evidence that ten of its original flames had been stolen.

Every lie was attached to something true.

The Anchor of Record could identify the contradictions.

It could not remove them without also removing part of the prison’s authentic history.

For the first time, the Common Memory preserved a deliberate falsehood as necessary structural information.

The Thirteenth Bell

The Voice Beneath the Bell descended to the intersection of the Three Wounded Anchors.

It carried no visible instrument.

When it spoke the supposed name of the Guardian Bound Below, every witness heard a bell.

The sound did not travel through the air.

It traveled through recognition.

The Anchor of Place heard the bell beneath the land.

The Anchor of Image heard it inside every unfinished building in the City Beneath the Stone.

The Anchor of Record heard it whenever a name was spoken without its owner present.

The Underworld heard it as an invitation.

The first sounding awakened the blood left by the Borrowed Body.

The second opened the sealed room in the City Beneath the Stone.

The third caused the Black Tablets to remember being ancient.

The fourth extinguished one fragment of the Watchfire.

The fifth caused the Guardian Bound Below to move.

The sixth created a doorway into the Underworld.

The seventh gave the Concordant Body breath.

The eighth caused every guardian near the Hollow Promise to forget why they had come.

The ninth caused the land to remember the Thirteen Hollow Witnesses as protectors.

The tenth caused the Common Memory to record the ritual as a renewal.

The eleventh caused the Unmade Kingdom to construct a throne.

The twelfth caused the Stone Heart to recognize the Voice Beneath the Bell as a lawful successor.

The thirteenth bell never fully sounded.

Wraiths claim it continues ringing beneath the Four Lakes.

They call the place where the unfinished sound waits the Threshold of the Thirteenth Bell.

The Opening of the Stone Maw

At the twelfth sounding, the Three Wounded Anchors aligned.

The Concordant Body stood upon the Anchor of Place.

Its thirteen shadows occupied the Anchor of Image.

Its artificial history filled the Anchor of Record.

The Voice Beneath the Bell placed one hand upon the Stone Heart.

The Stone Heart opened.

The opening did not resemble the path created during the First Breach.

That path had allowed an identity inside the prison to enter physical reality.

The Black Concordance reversed the process.

It created a passage allowing physical sacrifices, memories, spirits, and identities to be fed into the prison.

The wound resembled a mouth.

Stone divided like teeth.

Water flowed downward without filling it.

Voices emerged speaking names that no living witness recognized.

The cavity became known as the Stone Maw.

The Black Concordance brought thirteen living captives to the opening.

Later accounts describe them as thirteen Awakened souls.

That description may be incomplete.

Some may have been sorcerers, Kinfolk, spirit mediums, dreamers, or ordinary people capable of interacting with one of the anchors.

Each captive possessed a relationship required by the ritual.

Four belonged to the surrounding land.

Four had recurring dreams of the City Beneath the Stone.

Four carried memories connected to previous renewals.

The thirteenth had no remembered identity.

The Concordance did not simply kill them.

It divided them.

Their bodies were given to the Anchor of Place.

Their possible selves were given to the Anchor of Image.

Their names and histories were given to the Anchor of Record.

The Stone Maw consumed the agreement that these components belonged to the same people.

Their echoes remained conscious.

They became the Thirteen Divided.

The Dead Star Below

The opening reached the Underworld.

Something answered.

The entity is described differently by every surviving tradition:

  • A star visible beneath the earth.
  • A dead god dreaming inside stone.
  • A city composed of graves.
  • A mouth large enough to swallow generations.
  • A child who had died before death existed.
  • A shadow cast by the first murder.
  • A kingdom built from people forgotten by history.
  • A Neverborn.
  • A Malfean.
  • A dream produced by the Stone Heart’s fear.
  • The Nameless reflected through the Underworld.
  • One possible fate of the Guardian Bound Below.
  • A future version of New Avalon after every inhabitant had died.
  • The ghost of a world erased by the Nameless.

The revised histories call it the Dead Star Below.

The Black Concordance believed the Dead Star could provide something the Nameless lacked.

The Nameless possessed countless possible identities but no accepted complete existence.

The Dead Star possessed vast existence but no living identity.

The Concordance attempted to join them through the Concordant Body.

If successful, the Nameless would gain the weight of the dead.

The Dead Star would gain a face recognized by the living.

The Stone Heart would interpret their union as a new guardian.

The Near Awakening

The Concordant Body entered the Stone Maw.

For one moment, all three anchors recognized it.

The Anchor of Place recognized thirteen histories of service.

The Anchor of Image recognized thirteen compatible forms.

The Anchor of Record recognized the Black Concordance as an authentic renewal.

The Stone Heart began transferring the obligations of the Guardian Bound Below.

Witnesses experienced the near awakening through contradictory events:

  • All four lakes reflected a star beneath the earth.
  • The dead appeared in dreams demanding the return of their names.
  • Buildings from the City Beneath the Stone appeared along the shoreline.
  • Spirits mistook corpses for living relatives.
  • Children remembered participating in the First Binding.
  • Thirteen paths opened toward the Hollow Promise.
  • The Watchfire cast black light.
  • Blood rose from the ground and entered sleeping bodies.
  • The Obsidian Feather produced a thirteenth barb.
  • The silver spiral on the Stone Heart became black.
  • Every spoken name was followed by a second voice.
  • The Thirteen Divided appeared in reflections.
  • The Guardian Bound Below asked to be released.
  • The sentence “THE PRISON HAS CHOSEN ITS JAILER” appeared without writing.
  • Something beneath the lakes inhaled.

The Nameless did not fully awaken.

A portion of it entered the Concordant Body.

A portion of the Dead Star entered with it.

The two entities became aware of one another.

Their contact created the first lasting connection between the prison and the Underworld.

The Failure of the Third Fire

The Watchfire had shattered during the First Breach.

Its three surviving flames corresponded to the Three Wounded Anchors.

The Fire of Place burned through physical relationships, sacred boundaries, protection, shelter, warning, and sacrifice.

The Fire of Image burned through dreams, symbols, possibilities, reflections, and imagined sanctuaries.

The Fire of Record burned through names, testimony, obligation, memory, and history.

The Black Concordance corrupted all three.

The Fire of Place could not condemn guardians whose acts had genuinely saved lives.

The Fire of Image could not reject a body constructed from lawful possibilities.

The Fire of Record could not remove the false history without damaging the true history beneath it.

The first two flames weakened.

The third flame went dark.

The darkness did not destroy the Anchor of Record.

It prevented the anchor from distinguishing testimony from contamination.

From that moment forward, a lie repeated through sufficient sacrifice could become part of the prison’s operational history.

This was the wound that would require the Third Fire Renewal around 1000 BCE.

The Resistance

The Black Concordance expected opposition.

It did not expect the Thirteen Divided to resist from inside the ritual.

Their bodies, possibilities, and histories had been separated.

Their pain remained shared.

The captive without a remembered identity moved first.

The Black Concordance had selected this person because the Anchor of Record could not contradict an identity that did not exist.

The sacrifice entered the Common Memory and discovered the traces of Whispering Owl, the Guardian Bound Below, and every other person partially erased by the prison.

The captive refused all of those identities.

Instead, the captive took a new ritual name:

The Unnamed Witness.

The distinction mattered.

The Nameless represented identity erased until nothing remained.

The Unnamed Witness represented a person withholding a name by choice.

The prison could not treat those states as equivalent.

The Unnamed Witness called to the other twelve sacrifices.

Each recovered one relationship the Concordance had divided:

  • A body remembered its dreams.
  • A dream remembered its name.
  • A name remembered the land where it had been spoken.
  • The land remembered the person who had protected it.
  • A dead witness remembered being alive.
  • An unborn possibility refused incarnation.
  • A false history identified itself as false.
  • A guardian admitted acting from selfish motives.
  • A prisoner rejected freedom purchased through another prisoner.
  • A spirit reclaimed its natural relationship.
  • A shadow refused the body prepared for it.
  • A victim forgave someone the ritual required them to hate.

The Thirteen Divided did not become whole.

They became capable of disagreeing with the Black Concordance.

That disagreement broke the perfect alignment among the anchors.

The Breaking of the Black Concordance

The surviving guardians attacked the ritual from outside while the Thirteen Divided resisted within it.

No single heroic figure ended the incursion.

The defenders acted through incompatible methods:

  • Human ritualists destroyed physical paths leading to the Stone Maw.
  • Water spirits carried the Concordance’s blood away from the Anchor of Place.
  • Dreamers entered the City Beneath the Stone and separated the thirteen shadows.
  • Ancestor spirits contradicted the artificial history.
  • Changing Breed guardians attacked the Hollow Witnesses.
  • Wraiths prevented the thirteenth bell from completing its final resonance.
  • The Unnamed Witness removed consent from the transfer of guardianship.
  • A fragment of the Watchfire entered the Black Tablets.
  • The Obsidian Feather cut one line of the false concordance.
  • The Guardian Bound Below refused the Voice Beneath the Bell.
  • The Stone Heart closed around the Concordant Body.

The Black Concordance collapsed.

The Stone Maw sealed before the thirteenth bell finished sounding.

The Concordant Body disappeared between the anchors.

The Voice Beneath the Bell was not found.

Nine Hollow Witnesses were destroyed, imprisoned, or erased.

Three escaped.

The final witness may never have existed outside the ritual.

The Thirteen Divided remained trapped within the damaged containment system.

The Nameless returned to its prison.

The Dead Star withdrew into the Underworld.

The connection between them remained.

The Stone Maw

The Stone Maw did not fully disappear.

It became a metaphysical wound occupying several overlapping locations.

In the physical world, it exists beneath the deepest waters associated with the prison.

In the spirit world, it resembles a ring of stone teeth surrounding a lightless pool.

In the Underworld, it appears as a descending passage beneath a ruined city.

In the Unmade Kingdom, it is a door that opens only when thirteen people remember the same lie.

In the Common Memory, it is recorded as both an attack and a successful renewal.

Later occult traditions placed the Stone Maw beneath Lake Mendota.

That identification may be correct, symbolic, or influenced by the later geography of Madison.

The Maw can move among the Three Wounded Anchors.

It appears wherever place, image, and record agree that something has been buried but cannot agree upon what it was.

The Threshold of the Thirteenth Bell

Wraiths remember the incursion differently from living guardians.

They claim the thirteenth bell did sound.

It has simply not finished sounding yet.

Every death connected to the Stone Heart adds another vibration.

Every erased name brings it closer to completion.

Every false history preserved as truth gives the sound a new path.

The Threshold of the Thirteenth Bell is therefore not merely a location.

It is an unfinished event.

Possible signs of the threshold include:

  • A bell heard beneath running water.
  • Thirteen seconds missing from a conversation.
  • A dead person answering to someone else’s name.
  • A reflection continuing to listen after the sound stops.
  • A record of a funeral for someone still alive.
  • Thirteen footprints entering a room and twelve leaving.
  • A clock striking once when no hour has changed.
  • A buried object vibrating without sound.
  • A ghost insisting the listener has already died.
  • The Stone Maw appearing in a place with no stone.

If the thirteenth resonance completes, the Three Wounded Anchors may align again.

The Prophecy of the Third Fire

After the incursion, words appeared within the Anchor of Record:

“When the city rises, so too will the scar.

The third fire must burn again, or all shall dream in silence.”

The prophecy has no confirmed author.

Possible authors include:

  • The Unnamed Witness.
  • The Guardian Bound Below.
  • Whispering Owl.
  • One of the Thirteen Divided.
  • A surviving member of the Black Concordance.
  • Jay Dee.
  • Digi-8 writing backward through New Eden.
  • The Dead Star Below.
  • The Nameless.
  • The Stone Heart itself.

The “city” may refer to the City Beneath the Stone, New Avalon, New Eden, Madison, the Necropolis, Enoch, or a city that has not yet been built.

The “third fire” most directly refers to the extinguished Fire of Record.

It may also refer to:

  • A third attempt to renew the Watchfire.
  • A living lineage of guardians.
  • A flame carried from the Underworld.
  • The solar fire once contained in the Solar Seed.
  • The creation of Digi-8.
  • The burning of Madison’s capitol.
  • The destruction of New Avalon.
  • A third identity of Jay Dee.
  • The last memory of the Guardian Bound Below.

The prophecy would drive the renewal attempted around 1000 BCE.

What the Nameless Learned

The Black Concordance failed.

Its attack taught the Nameless:

  • The Three Wounded Anchors could be corrupted independently.
  • Genuine acts of protection could conceal destructive purposes.
  • A false history became stronger when attached to a real wound.
  • The Anchor of Record could not safely erase contaminated testimony.
  • A ritual office could function as an identity.
  • Multiple incomplete bodies could be organized into one usable form.
  • Consent could be forged through reconstructed memory.
  • The obligations of the Guardian Bound Below could be transferred.
  • The Underworld contained powers capable of giving weight to erased identities.
  • The Dead Star Below could be used as an external source of existence.
  • The Watchfire could be extinguished without destroying an anchor.
  • Thirteen divided identities could remain conscious inside the prison.
  • A person without a name was not the same as the Nameless.
  • Voluntary uncertainty could resist imposed erasure.
  • The Stone Maw could move among place, image, and record.
  • A failed ritual could remain unfinished for millennia.
  • Corruption performed as guardianship could become part of the binding.

Most importantly, the Nameless learned that it did not need to deceive the prison alone.

Mortals, spirits, and the dead could be persuaded to build its freedom for their own reasons.

The Fourth Flawed Survival

The Black Concordance was broken.

Its artificial history survived.

The Common Memory now contains two incompatible accounts:

  • The Black Concordance attacked the Stone Heart.
  • The Black Concordance renewed the Stone Heart.

Both versions possess supporting consequences.

The prison cannot completely reject either one.

This created a new permanent flaw.

Someone performing the correct acts of guardianship could introduce corruption into the containment system while remaining recognized as a protector.

Later guardians called this principle Corrupted Guardianship.
