360 Million BCE: The Spider Spirit is Born
The first spider was designed as a creature of balance. Its first act was to become something its creators had not intended.
Approximately 360 million years ago, the Weaver attempted to imprison the Wyld.
She failed.
The collision between Pattern and primal possibility released an immense wave of spiritual energy. Ananasa, already an ancient power in the service of the Weaver, gathered that energy before it could dissipate into creation.
Then something unexpected occurred.
The Wyrm, still fulfilling its original purpose as the Balancer, offered to help her create.
Together, Ananasa and the Wyrm fashioned the spider: a living creature intended to embody creation, structure, predation, patience, and necessary death in perfect proportion.
The spider fulfilled their design.
Then it exceeded it.
Without command from Ananasa or any member of the Triat, the new creature manifested a spirit of its own.
The Triat had created life before. Spirits had accompanied life since the earliest ages of Earth. What surprised them was the spider's apparent spiritual independence. It did not merely receive an assigned purpose. It answered creation with an identity of its own.
For Ananasa, this was revelation.
For the Weaver, it was a warning.
The Late Devonian World
Approximately 360 million years ago, Earth stood near the end of the Devonian Period.
The oceans remained rich with fish, reefs, early sharks, and numerous forms now extinct. On land, forests had begun transforming the continents. Roots broke stone into soil, fallen vegetation accumulated, and freshwater ecosystems expanded through rivers, wetlands, and floodplains.
The earliest tetrapods had appeared, although they remained closely tied to water. Arthropods already inhabited the land, including early arachnids and wingless insects.
The fossil history of spiders remains incomplete.
Mortal paleontology does not confirm the appearance of true spiders precisely 360 million years ago. Devonian fossils demonstrate that arachnids were already diversifying on land, while the oldest securely identified true spiders are younger. Some Devonian spider-like animals possessed silk-producing structures but lacked the full anatomy of modern spiders.
The supernatural account therefore does not need to describe the instantaneous appearance of a modern spider.
It may describe the creation of the spiritual and biological Pattern from which true spiders emerged.
The Weaver’s Failed Prison
The history bible states that the Weaver attempted to trap the Wyld and failed.
The reason for this attempt is not recorded.
Later Garou and Ananasi traditions offer several explanations:
- The Weaver feared that unchecked creation would dissolve every stable Pattern.
- The Wyld had begun altering forms faster than the Weaver could define them.
- The Weaver mistook unpredictability for hostility.
- The imprisonment was an experiment rather than an act of war.
- Later storytellers moved an early conflict backward in time to foreshadow the Severing.
- The event occurred outside ordinary time and cannot be placed accurately within mortal chronology.
Whatever her intention, the Weaver tried to impose a permanent boundary upon the embodiment of limitless possibility.
The Wyld resisted.
The resulting rupture released energy containing both Pattern and uncontrolled transformation. Neither force could claim it completely.
Ananasa recognized its potential.
The Wyrm Creates
The Wyrm’s participation is one of the most important elements of the story.
During this age, the Wyrm had not yet become the corrupted power known to the modern Garou. It remained the force of conclusion, destruction, decomposition, and renewal.
The Wyrm did not exist only to consume.
It wanted to create.
The history bible states that the Wyrm assisted Ananasa because it desired to create rather than merely devour. This suggests that the Balancer was already dissatisfied with being understood only through endings.
Ananasa accepted its assistance.
The Wyld’s released energy provided possibility. Ananasa imposed purpose and proportion. The Wyrm contributed predation, mortality, and transformation through consumption.
The Weaver was not named as a willing participant in the act, although Ananasa still carried her influence.
The spider was therefore born from all three principles:
- The Wyld provided the energy of possibility and change.
- The Weaver’s Pattern lived within Ananasa’s design.
- The Wyrm gave the creature hunger, death, and renewal.
No single member of the Triat could claim it completely.
The Perfectly Balanced Creature
Ananasa and the Wyrm designed the spider as a creature of balance.
Its body joined apparent contradictions:
- It created webs and destroyed prey.
- It waited with perfect stillness, then moved with sudden violence.
- It imposed geometric order while adapting that structure to terrain.
- It consumed life while controlling populations that might otherwise overwhelm their environments.
- It could survive alone, yet remain connected to the world through every vibration in its web.
- It was fragile in isolation but formidable within the structure it created.
The web became the clearest expression of this balance.
A web is Pattern made visible, but it is never permanent. Wind tears it. Rain burdens it. Struggling prey damages it. The spider repairs, abandons, or rebuilds it according to changing conditions.
The Weaver creates structures that resist change.
The spider creates structures that survive through change.
Later Ananasi theologians regard this distinction as the first evidence that Ananasa understood balance more deeply than the Weaver.
The Birth of Spider’s Spirit
The history bible states that the spider soon created its own spirit.
This event surprised Ananasa and the Triat.
The precise meaning of that statement remains disputed.
Possible interpretations include:
- The first physical spider generated a spiritual reflection through its behavior and resonance.
- The collective existence of early spiders awakened a new Incarna.
- Ananasa created the body, but the Wyld’s energy allowed its spirit to emerge independently.
- The Wyrm’s contribution gave the creature sufficient interiority to define itself.
- Spider existed as a dormant spirit and used the new creature as its first physical expression.
- The story describes the point when Spider ceased to be merely an extension of Ananasa.
- The “first spider” was a spiritual prototype rather than a single biological organism.
The final interpretation helps reconcile supernatural history with the uncertain fossil record. Ananasa may have created the Pattern of Spider before true spiders appeared in their recognizable physical form.
Whatever occurred, Spider was not simply given a spirit.
Spider became a spirit.
That distinction changed Ananasa’s understanding of creation. A sufficiently balanced Pattern could produce something its maker had not commanded.
It could answer.
Ananasa and Spider
Ananasa is frequently identified with spiders, but she and the spirit born from the first spider should not automatically be treated as the same entity.
Ananasa existed billions of years before physical spiders. During those earlier ages, she may have manifested as living geometry, interconnection, adaptive Pattern, or a form no modern observer would recognize.
The birth of Spider gave her a physical symbol.
Later traditions describe their relationship in different ways:
- Spider is Ananasa’s first child.
- Spider is Ananasa’s reflection in living matter.
- Spider is the collective spirit of every spider.
- Spider is an independent Incarna who chose Ananasa as its queen.
- Ananasa adopted Spider’s form after recognizing its perfection.
- The distinction between Ananasa and Spider is a theological error created by lesser spirits.
The history bible confirms only that the spider developed its own spirit and that this surprised Ananasa and the Triat.
It does not identify that spirit as Ananasa herself.
Gaia’s Children of Memory and Sea
The same portion of the history bible places the creation of two other Changing Breeds within this mythic age.
Gaia and the Wyld created the Mokole to serve as Gaia’s memory.
The Mokole received the capacity to preserve the experiences of ancient Earth through ancestral recollection. Their purpose was not merely to remember individual ancestors. They were charged with carrying the truth of Gaia’s changing ages across extinction, catastrophe, and transformation.
The Wyld also created the Rokea for Gaia.
The Rokea were bound to the oceans and shaped as relentless survivors, hunters, and protectors of Gaia’s aquatic realms. Where the Mokole preserved memory, the Rokea enforced the violent continuity of the sea.
These creations reflected different answers to the same fear.
The world was changing.
Something had to remember what it had been.
Something else had to survive whatever came next.
The Insect Races
The Weaver next created the Insect Races, shapeshifters associated with:
- Bees
- Moths
- Hornets
- Locusts
- Ants
- Termites
These Changing Breeds were intended to carry order into Gaia’s ecosystems. Their forms emphasized collective labor, hierarchy, construction, specialization, communication, and sacrifice for the greater Pattern.
The use of modern insect names should be understood mythically.
Several of these insect lineages arose long after the Devonian. The names may identify spiritual Patterns that later manifested through familiar biological species, or the entire sequence may have unfolded across millions of years.
The history bible does not require every Insect Race to have appeared simultaneously.
The Destruction of the Moths
The Moth shapeshifters refused to serve the Weaver directly.
The reason for their refusal is not recorded.
Later traditions suggest that the Moths valued dreams, Luna, transformation, darkness, or the freedom to follow light without possessing it. Whatever their beliefs, they rejected the role assigned to them.
The Weaver responded with spiritual annihilation.
She destroyed their spirits.
This was more than the physical extermination of a Changing Breed. It attacked the spiritual foundation that allowed the Moths to exist as a people. Their line was not merely killed. Its connection between flesh and spirit was severed.
The Wyld reacted with fury.
It attacked the Weaver, not because the Moths were perfectly Wyld, but because the Weaver had attempted to erase a possibility from creation.
The conflict escalated beyond Earth.
The Death of the Living Moon
In retaliation for the Wyld’s attack, the Weaver destroyed the developing life of the Moon.
The history bible presents this catastrophe as a direct act of the Weaver.
The nature of lunar life remains uncertain. It may have been:
- Physical organisms existing before the Moon became barren.
- Spirit life inhabiting a once-fluid lunar Umbra.
- Wyld-born possibilities that never fully entered physical reality.
- A separate lunar biosphere erased from history as well as matter.
- Symbolic language for the Weaver’s domination of the Moon’s spiritual Pattern.
Whatever was destroyed, the event left the Moon wounded and barren.
No publicly known mortal evidence confirms that complex life once inhabited the lunar surface. Within supernatural cosmology, that absence does not disprove the story. If the Weaver erased the Pattern thoroughly enough, conventional evidence may never have survived.
The Moon remained.
Its living future did not.
The Creation of the Ananasi
After these events, Ananasa created the Ananasi.
The Ananasi were not merely humans who could transform into spiders. They were Ananasa’s chosen agents, designed to move between flesh and spirit while pursuing her understanding of balance.
Their creation drew upon the lesson of the first spider.
A perfect servant would merely obey.
A balanced creature needed judgment.
The Ananasi inherited the spider’s contradictions. They could build and destroy, preserve and manipulate, wait for centuries and then act in a single decisive instant.
They served Ananasa, but their purpose extended beyond simple loyalty to the Weaver.
That distinction would become essential during the coming catastrophe.
The Severing
The history bible next records the Severing.
The Weaver succeeded where her earlier attempt against the Wyld had failed. She trapped the Wyrm within a prison of logic, definition, and Pattern.
The imprisonment drove the Wyrm insane.
The Balancer fractured into corruption, hunger, and destruction without purpose. The force that had helped create the spider could no longer distinguish necessary endings from universal annihilation.
The Weaver also changed.
Having imprisoned the Wyrm, she began calcifying the Umbra. Fluid spiritual territories hardened into ordered reflections. Paths narrowed. Possibilities collapsed. Pattern became prison.
The original balance of the Triat was broken.
The spider remained as evidence that another balance had once been possible.
The Insect Wars
The Severing was followed by the Insect Wars.
The history bible states that the Ananasi exterminated the Insect Races.
Later accounts claim that the surviving Insect Races had become agents of the Weaver’s increasingly absolute order. Their collective discipline, once intended to stabilize ecosystems, became a weapon against anything that resisted definition.
The Ananasi answered with genocide.
They destroyed the shapeshifting lineages associated with bees, hornets, locusts, ants, and termites. Some traditions claim they also altered the insects’ spirits so that flesh and spirit could never reunite in the same manner.
The result was the erasure of an entire branch of Gaia’s Changing Breeds.
The Ananasi may have prevented the Weaver from acquiring an army capable of imposing absolute order upon Earth.
They also annihilated peoples who might have surrendered, changed, or chosen another path.
Both statements can be true.
That moral wound remains part of their inheritance.
Historical Reliability
The Madtown by Night history bible explicitly records:
- The Weaver attempted to trap the Wyld and failed.
- Ananasa captured the released energy.
- The uncorrupted Wyrm helped Ananasa create the spider.
- The spider was designed as a perfectly balanced creature.
- The spider manifested its own spirit.
- Gaia and the Wyld created the Mokole as Gaia’s memory.
- The Wyld created the Rokea for Gaia.
- The Weaver created the Insect Races.
- The Weaver destroyed the Moth spirits after they refused her.
- The Wyld attacked the Weaver in response.
- The Weaver destroyed life on the Moon.
- Ananasa created the Ananasi.
- The Weaver imprisoned the Wyrm during the Severing.
- The Wyrm went insane.
- The Weaver began calcifying the Umbra.
- The Ananasi exterminated the Insect Races.
The bible groups these events beneath the 360-million-year marker. It does not establish their exact duration.
The safest interpretation is that approximately 360 million BCE marks the beginning of a mythic sequence that may have unfolded across millions of years.
Legacy in 2025
Spider spirits still carry the contradiction born in the first web.
They are associated with patience, predation, destiny, craftsmanship, traps, hidden communication, and the perception of distant movement through connected systems.
Modern Spider spirits may inhabit:
- Physical webs.
- Abandoned buildings.
- Telephone and electrical networks.
- Surveillance systems.
- Computer networks.
- Bureaucracies.
- Cities and transportation grids.
- The Pattern Web itself.
The Ananasi continue to pursue their queen’s designs, but the extermination of the Insect Races stains every claim they make about balance.
The unanswered question is not whether the Ananasi preserved the world from the Weaver.
It is whether balance achieved through extermination deserves to be called balance at all.
