Ananasa, speaking to the Great Pattern in the Loom of Memory

Following her establishment as the Weaver’s chosen emissary during the Cambrian expansion, Ananasa, the First Spinner, witnessed a surge in biological diversity—especially in the oceans and early landmasses. But while amphibians crawled from primordial swamps and plants reached toward the sun, something was missing in Gaia’s dream:
''The sky had always moved. Then, for the first time, life moved with it.''

Motion between the realms.
Approximately 400 million years ago, the first insects known to mortal science were already present on land. Supernatural history places a more dramatic event within the same immense period: [[Ananasa]] diversified the insects and gave some of their descendants flight.

Earth had begun to teem with crawling, swimming, and rooted life—but the skies were silent, empty save for wind and storm. The spiritual ecology lacked messengers, connectors, and pattern-linkers.
According to the Madtown by Night history bible, Ananasa did not create all insect life from nothing. She altered, divided, and diversified living Patterns that already existed.

To answer this silence, Ananasa gave the world flight.
The result was the first great radiation of flying insects.

🦋 The Creation of the First Sky-Bound Spirits
This account is preserved primarily through Ananasi teachings, ancient spirit testimony, and later interpretations of the [[Pattern Web]]. It cannot be confirmed as literal biological history.
In a moment of immense spiritual artistry, Ananasa drew on the Weaver’s geometry, the Wyld’s potential, and the Wyrm’s understanding of transformation to create a new template of being: the flying insect.

She designed these lifeforms to exist in multiple layers at once:
== The Devonian World ==

Material: With light bodies, jointed limbs, and delicate wings.
Around 400 million years ago, Earth was in the Devonian Period.

Spiritual: Each with a unique resonant frequency in the Umbra.
Life in the oceans was already abundant. Fish diversified into numerous forms, reefs spread through shallow seas, and early sharks hunted beneath the surface.

Symbolic: Representing messages, change, order, and decay in cultural myths yet to come.
The land was changing more slowly.

Among her first creations:
Early vascular plants spread across damp ground. Roots deepened. Soil became more complex. The first forests had not yet reached their later extent, but vegetation was beginning to reshape the atmosphere, waterways, and exposed continents.

Insect Physical Role Spiritual Role
Small arthropods inhabited these developing terrestrial ecosystems. Early insects or their close relatives moved among plants, fungi, decaying material, and moist soil.
Dragonflies Apex aerial predators of the early skies Spirits of vigilance, ancestral memory, watchers of the Dreaming
Mayflies Short-lived, rapid breeders Spirits of impermanence, urgency, the first rites of time
Beetles Earthbound flyers with armored forms Spirits of resilience, transformation, spiritual recyclers
Wasps & Hornets Predators and defenders Spirits of justice, vengeance, protection of sacred sites
Moths Lunar navigators Spirits of dream-guidance, illusions, attraction to forbidden truths
Butterflies Masters of transformation Embodiments of soul evolution, death and rebirth, and threshold-travelers

🕸️ Spiritual Consequences of Insect Flight
The skies remained almost entirely beyond the reach of animal life.
With insects taking to the skies, the spirit world itself responded:

Umbra currents shifted, creating new airborne spirit-paths known as the Threadways—invisible routes that ferried thoughts, dreams, and spirit-chatter across territories.
No birds, bats, or flying reptiles existed. The first known tetrapods had not yet emerged onto land. If insects acquired powered flight during this broad period, they became the first animals to enter the air under their own strength.

The first spirit-swarms emerged—living clouds of resonant energy tied to insect migrations, believed by later Dreamspeakers to be fragments of Gaia’s consciousness in motion.
== The Mortal Account ==

Insect-based spirits became intercessors between primal spirit lords. Unlike the elemental Titans, insect spirits were humble, numerous, and adaptive.
Mortal science places the origin of insects considerably earlier than their oldest unambiguous fossils.

This marked the first time that a “minor” class of creatures had such profound impact on both the physical and metaphysical ecology of the planet.
Genetic studies suggest that insects may have diverged from aquatic crustacean ancestors approximately 480 million years ago. Fossil evidence becomes clearer around 400 million years ago, although the early insect record remains fragmentary.

🕷️ Ananasa’s Embodied Legacy
The precise origin of insect wings is unresolved.
Though she remained a being of spirit, Ananasa gave part of herself to her creations:

A fragment of her mind is said to dwell in every web.
Proposed explanations include:

Her Whispering Wing Ritual, used to awaken insect spirits, became one of the most sacred rites among future shamanic orders.
* Wings developed from movable plates or lobes along the body.
* Wings evolved from structures associated with ancestral limbs.
* Aquatic or semiaquatic ancestors possessed mobile structures later adapted for air.
* Several existing structures combined gradually into functional wings.
* The earliest stages of flight left little fossil evidence.

The spider’s dual nature—predator and creator—spread through her kin, especially to the beings that would later become the Ananasi shapeshifters.
The first insects capable of sustained flight may have appeared during the Devonian or early Carboniferous. Unambiguous winged-insect fossils become substantially more common later.

In many versions of the myth, this was the moment Ananasa became Queen, no longer a servant of the Weaver alone, but a sovereign force. She claimed dominion over:
Mortal evidence does not support the simultaneous appearance of modern dragonflies, mayflies, beetles, wasps, moths, and butterflies 400 million years ago. Those recognizable lineages emerged across different periods.

Thread (destiny),
Supernatural traditions use their names because later insects inherited, reflected, or reinterpreted older spiritual Patterns.

Form (structure),
== Ananasa’s Intervention ==

Flight (freedom),
The history bible states that Ananasa created different species of flying insects by diversifying them.

And Transformation (balance).
Ananasi theologians generally interpret this as an act of transformation rather than creation from nothing. Ananasa took existing arthropod Patterns and opened them to new possibilities.

🐝 The Balance She Built
She made bodies lighter.
Insect life became essential to Gaia’s grand design:

Pollination, predation, and decomposition processes increased exponentially, enriching the spirit-dreamscape with symbolic cycles.
She altered joints, surfaces, senses, and methods of movement.

Insect spirits became teachers, dream-weavers, and messengers of the gods, each carrying resonance across worlds.
She divided one Pattern into many related Patterns, each capable of responding differently to the changing world.

But with this complexity came new tensions:
In the most literal version of the story, Ananasa engineered the first insect wings.

The Wyrm began to envy Ananasa’s success, seeing her creations as dangerously stabilizing.
Other interpretations are less direct:

The Wyld grew restless, disliking how the diversity of life was being folded into patterns.
* Ananasa guided natural variation without determining its final result.
* She created spiritual Patterns that physical evolution gradually followed.
* She awakened the spirits of flight within insects that had already developed wings.
* She preserved successful adaptations within the Pattern Web.
* Later Ananasi placed her at the origin of insect flight to express her authority over transformation.
* The event describes millions of years of influence as though it were a single act.

The Weaver became possessive, trying to claim all Ananasa’s offspring as her own.
All versions agree on one principle: Ananasa did not merely reproduce a finished design. She created diversity.

Ananasa refused to choose sides. This act of defiance sowed the seeds of the Severing—the cosmic rupture between Weaver and Wyrm that would eventually drive both mad.
The First Spinner allowed a single solution to divide into thousands.

🜃 Legacy in the World of Darkness
== The First Flight ==
The resonance seeded by Ananasa’s insects would later give rise to:

The Insect Races (shapeshifters born of bee, moth, hornet, and locust)
The earliest flight would have been brief, unstable, and dangerous.

The Ananasi (her spider-chosen children, reborn during the Severing)
An insect lifted from a plant or patch of wet ground. Air caught beneath its body. It crossed a distance no crawling creature could cross. It landed somewhere beyond the reach of its former world.

Insect Totems still venerated by certain Dreamspeakers, Bastet, and Bone Gnawers.
That small movement changed terrestrial life.

Moth cults, dragonfly philosophers, and butterfly oracles in both fae and mage circles.
Flight allowed insects to:

Insect-based spirit-beings are often considered "pre-Fera" cousins, and some Garou even argue that the insect spirits were Gaia’s first children, not the wolf.
* Escape predators and environmental hazards.
* Reach isolated food and shelter.
* Disperse across rivers, wetlands, and broken terrain.
* Locate mates across greater distances.
* Exploit the growing vertical structure of terrestrial plants.
* Establish populations in habitats inaccessible from the ground.

400 Million BCE: Ananasa Diversifies Insects

The sky had always moved. Then, for the first time, life moved with it.

Approximately 400 million years ago, the first insects known to mortal science were already present on land. Supernatural history places a more dramatic event within the same immense period: Ananasa diversified the insects and gave some of their descendants flight.

According to the Madtown by Night history bible, Ananasa did not create all insect life from nothing. She altered, divided, and diversified living Patterns that already existed.

The result was the first great radiation of flying insects.

This account is preserved primarily through Ananasi teachings, ancient spirit testimony, and later interpretations of the Pattern Web. It cannot be confirmed as literal biological history.

The Devonian World

Around 400 million years ago, Earth was in the Devonian Period.

Life in the oceans was already abundant. Fish diversified into numerous forms, reefs spread through shallow seas, and early sharks hunted beneath the surface.

The land was changing more slowly.

Early vascular plants spread across damp ground. Roots deepened. Soil became more complex. The first forests had not yet reached their later extent, but vegetation was beginning to reshape the atmosphere, waterways, and exposed continents.

Small arthropods inhabited these developing terrestrial ecosystems. Early insects or their close relatives moved among plants, fungi, decaying material, and moist soil.

The skies remained almost entirely beyond the reach of animal life.

No birds, bats, or flying reptiles existed. The first known tetrapods had not yet emerged onto land. If insects acquired powered flight during this broad period, they became the first animals to enter the air under their own strength.

The Mortal Account

Mortal science places the origin of insects considerably earlier than their oldest unambiguous fossils.

Genetic studies suggest that insects may have diverged from aquatic crustacean ancestors approximately 480 million years ago. Fossil evidence becomes clearer around 400 million years ago, although the early insect record remains fragmentary.

The precise origin of insect wings is unresolved.

Proposed explanations include:

  • Wings developed from movable plates or lobes along the body.
  • Wings evolved from structures associated with ancestral limbs.
  • Aquatic or semiaquatic ancestors possessed mobile structures later adapted for air.
  • Several existing structures combined gradually into functional wings.
  • The earliest stages of flight left little fossil evidence.

The first insects capable of sustained flight may have appeared during the Devonian or early Carboniferous. Unambiguous winged-insect fossils become substantially more common later.

Mortal evidence does not support the simultaneous appearance of modern dragonflies, mayflies, beetles, wasps, moths, and butterflies 400 million years ago. Those recognizable lineages emerged across different periods.

Supernatural traditions use their names because later insects inherited, reflected, or reinterpreted older spiritual Patterns.

Ananasa’s Intervention

The history bible states that Ananasa created different species of flying insects by diversifying them.

Ananasi theologians generally interpret this as an act of transformation rather than creation from nothing. Ananasa took existing arthropod Patterns and opened them to new possibilities.

She made bodies lighter.

She altered joints, surfaces, senses, and methods of movement.

She divided one Pattern into many related Patterns, each capable of responding differently to the changing world.

In the most literal version of the story, Ananasa engineered the first insect wings.

Other interpretations are less direct:

  • Ananasa guided natural variation without determining its final result.
  • She created spiritual Patterns that physical evolution gradually followed.
  • She awakened the spirits of flight within insects that had already developed wings.
  • She preserved successful adaptations within the Pattern Web.
  • Later Ananasi placed her at the origin of insect flight to express her authority over transformation.
  • The event describes millions of years of influence as though it were a single act.

All versions agree on one principle: Ananasa did not merely reproduce a finished design. She created diversity.

The First Spinner allowed a single solution to divide into thousands.

The First Flight

The earliest flight would have been brief, unstable, and dangerous.

An insect lifted from a plant or patch of wet ground. Air caught beneath its body. It crossed a distance no crawling creature could cross. It landed somewhere beyond the reach of its former world.

That small movement changed terrestrial life.

Flight allowed insects to:

  • Escape predators and environmental hazards.
  • Reach isolated food and shelter.
  • Disperse across rivers, wetlands, and broken terrain.
  • Locate mates across greater distances.
  • Exploit the growing vertical structure of terrestrial plants.
  • Establish populations in habitats inaccessible from the ground.

Insect flight also created new pressures. Predators adapted to follow movement above the soil. Plants responded to feeding and dispersal. Competition expanded into three dimensions.

The sky became part of the living world.

The Spiritual Meaning of Flight

Spirit traditions describe the first insect flight as more than a physical adaptation.

Before this event, many terrestrial spirits were bound closely to particular bodies, waters, stones, plants, or territories. Flying insects carried living resonance across boundaries that had previously separated local spiritual ecologies.

A winged creature could feed in one place, rest in another, reproduce elsewhere, and die far from where it had emerged.

Later theurges interpreted these movements as connections between spiritual Patterns.

Possible consequences included:

  • Insect spirits acquiring stronger associations with travel and messages.
  • Local resonances spreading between previously isolated territories.
  • Swarms developing collective spiritual reflections.
  • Predatory insect spirits carrying the resonance of vigilance and pursuit.
  • Short-lived insects becoming associated with time and impermanence.
  • Molting and metamorphosis strengthening associations with transformation.
  • Nocturnal flight becoming connected with dreams, concealment, and moonlight.

These associations developed over immense periods. They should not be understood as a complete spiritual system created in a single moment.

The named spiritual roads sometimes called `Threadways` do not appear in the history bible. Some Ananasi or Dreamspeaker traditions may use that name, but it is not established as a universal feature of the Umbra.

The Children of the First Patterns

Later spiritual traditions connect modern insect groups with primordial Patterns attributed to Ananasa.

Later Insect Tradition Symbolic Inheritance Historical Caution
Dragonflies Vigilance, speed, predation, and the boundary between water and air Modern dragonflies did not appear in their present form at the beginning of insect flight.
Mayflies Impermanence, emergence, urgency, and brief transformation Their spiritual symbolism reflects their later life cycle, not necessarily Ananasa’s original design.
Beetles Armor, endurance, burial, decomposition, and renewal Beetles arose substantially later than the first insects.
Wasps and hornets Defense, hierarchy, vengeance, and protection of territory Hymenopteran lineages appeared long after the Devonian.
Moths Night, dreams, concealment, hunger, and dangerous attraction Moths belong to a much later evolutionary radiation.
Butterflies Transformation, beauty, death, rebirth, and crossing thresholds Butterflies were not present 400 million years ago.

Ananasi mystics do not necessarily claim that each modern group existed during the first flight.

Instead, they teach that the original Patterns divided repeatedly. Later insects inherited fragments of those Patterns and expressed them through new bodies, behaviors, and spiritual relationships.

Diversification and the Triat

Ananasa’s work drew upon principles associated with all three members of the Triat.

  • The Wyld appeared in variation, experimentation, mutation, and the possibility of flight.
  • The Weaver appeared in anatomy, inheritance, repetition, and the preservation of successful forms.
  • The Wyrm, still acting as the Balancer, appeared in predation, failure, death, and the removal of forms that could not survive.

This made insect diversification difficult to assign to a single cosmic power.

Ananasa was the Weaver’s creation, but her work did not produce a single fixed design. It generated countless competing forms. Some endured. Others vanished. Every successful Pattern remained vulnerable to further transformation.

Later Ananasi would regard this as evidence that Ananasa understood balance more clearly than her mother.

The Weaver could preserve a Pattern.

Ananasa could weave one that survived by changing.

What Had Not Yet Happened

Several later events should not be folded into this era.

Spiders had not yet received the special spiritual creation described in the history bible. That event belongs to:

The following developments also occurred later:

  • The creation of the Insect Races by the Weaver.
  • The destruction of the Moth spirits after they refused the Weaver.
  • The creation of the Ananasi.
  • The imprisonment and madness of the Wyrm.
  • The Severing.
  • The Insect Wars.
  • The Ananasi campaign against the Insect Races.

Ananasa’s diversification of insects may have established conditions that influenced these events. It did not directly cause all of them.

At this stage, the Triat’s ancient cycle had not yet suffered its final rupture.

Ecological Consequences

Insect diversification transformed terrestrial ecosystems, although not every modern insect function existed immediately.

Predation, scavenging, decomposition, spore feeding, and consumption of plant tissues became increasingly complex. Insects carried organic material and spiritual resonance between soil, water, plants, and the open air.

Pollination requires special qualification.

Flowering plants did not exist 400 million years ago. The familiar relationship between bees, butterflies, moths, and flowers developed much later. Earlier insects may eventually have carried pollen or reproductive material among nonflowering plants, but the great flowering-plant pollination systems belonged to another age.

The central consequence of this period was therefore not modern pollination.

It was mobility.

Small living things could now move between ecological layers. The ground, vegetation, water, and air ceased to be entirely separate worlds.

Ananasa’s Changing Identity

The history bible places Ananasa’s creation billions of years before the first physical spiders.

Her identity during this period remains uncertain.

She may have appeared as:

  • A shifting network of living connections.
  • A geometric intelligence without a stable body.
  • A many-limbed form that only later resembled a spider.
  • A spiritual presence expressed through every branching lineage.
  • A figure remembered retroactively through spider symbolism.

Later Ananasi accounts call her the First Spinner and Queen Ananasa. It is unclear whether she possessed those names or titles during this period.

The claim that this was the moment she became a sovereign queen does not appear in the history bible. It remains a possible Ananasi religious interpretation rather than settled history.

Legacy in the World of Darkness

Insect spirits became some of the most numerous and adaptable inhabitants of the terrestrial Umbra.

Their individual power often appeared modest beside dragons, storms, mountains, oceans, and other great spirits. Their strength came from abundance, specialization, and relationships.

A single insect spirit might be insignificant.

A swarm could become weather.

A colony could resemble a city.

A migration could carry spiritual influence across a continent.

These qualities later made insect spirits important to the Dreamspeakers, Changing Breeds, spirit workers, and occult societies. Different groups learned to approach them as messengers, hunters, scavengers, architects, judges, parasites, oracles, and custodians of transformation.

Claims that insect spirits were Gaia’s first children remain matters of theology. Spirits associated with microbial life, oceans, stone, weather, and early animals would all predate insect flight.

Insects were not the first life.

They may have been the first life to make the air into a road.

Legacy in 2025

The Patterns attributed to Ananasa remain visible in modern insect spirits.

Some still carry ancient associations with movement, adaptation, collective behavior, predation, decomposition, and transformation. Others have changed alongside human civilization.

Urban insect spirits may now gather around:

  • Electrical networks.
  • Apartment walls.
  • Industrial agriculture.
  • Chemical waste.
  • Artificial lighting.
  • Communication systems.
  • Climate-altered migration routes.
  • Abandoned buildings and forgotten infrastructure.

Modern characters encountering such spirits may discover that Ananasa’s oldest lesson has not changed.

Survival does not always belong to the strongest creature.

Sometimes it belongs to the smallest thing capable of becoming something else.

Historical Reliability

The Madtown by Night history bible explicitly states:

  • Approximately 400 million years ago, Ananasa created different species of flying insects by diversifying them.

It does not identify the precise insects involved, explain how the transformation occurred, or describe its immediate spiritual consequences.

Modern scientific evidence indicates:

  • Insects probably originated before 400 million years ago.
  • The oldest fossil evidence is approximately 400 million years old.
  • Insects were the first animals to evolve powered flight.
  • The precise date and anatomical origin of insect wings remain uncertain.
  • Many familiar insect groups appeared much later.
  • Flowering plants and their familiar insect pollinators did not yet exist.

The biological and supernatural accounts can be reconciled if Ananasa influenced an existing insect lineage or created spiritual Patterns through which later insect flight developed.

That reconciliation remains an interpretation.

No mortal witnessed the event. Ancient spirits offer contradictory memories, and Ananasa has never been known to reveal truth without purpose.
